A Stroll Out to Grey’s Glacier

Given the condition of our thighs yesterday, we decided on a benign stroll just a few miles out from town to get a view of Grey’s Glacier. We also decided not to pay the $200 bucks it would have cost to take a boat ride out to the face of the glacier. Having done that last year, we decided to satisfy ourselves by simply gazing from afar.

The glacier, like all the others, is part of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. And like all the others, except the Moreno Glacier, it too is receding. The blue waters of Lago Grey spill out from the glacier. Large and small ice chunks are continuously breaking off the face and eventually floating their way to the south end of the lake. They look completely out of place against the dry mountains.

We continue to have exceptional weather with each day sunnier and warmer than the previous. We are lathering on the sunscreen, though, as the ozone layer is seriously depleted here. While smaller than a few decades ago, it is still large enough to warrant extra care when outside.
