Village Life

We walked through a couple of villages with our guide. Both were very much the same, except the second was seemingly empty. People did not come out to greet us or follow us; instead, we caught glimpses of a few women and children in doorways or peeking around corners. One woman clearly did not like our presence as she waved us off when the guide called to her.

Aside from the lack of tools beyond very basic ones, there was also an absence of modern farm tools. There were wooden plows and wooden carts. A wooden loom and spindle were set up under a tarp. Woven baskets were everywhere. A few metal pots were stacked beside an outdoor cooking fire. Skinny farm animals were tethered to anything handy with well-used ropes or ropes made of tied-together cloth. They all looked miserable and skinny.

The houses were generally made of mud with thatch roofs. Some had tarps thrown over the roofs in places where they had leaked. Laundry was hung to dry across the front porches. USAID had clearly been to a few of the villages.
