One morning, we watched a bevy of hotel cats watching one of their particularly adventurous compadres climb to the top of a tree in pursuit of a bird that had landed on a branch. Clearly, the bird had a sense of humor. He sat there, even jumping to a nearer branch, until the cat got just within reach, and then flew on to the next tree. The cat was lodged with his belly over a branch for a good 5 minutes afterwards, feeling kind of duped, no doubt, and thinking that if he just lived in America, somebody would surely call the fire department and get him down. His friends sure as hell weren’t gonna help.
